Kapa & Kapa Printing Workshop

Kapa making is a traditional Hawaiian fabric art used to produce clothing, bedding, robes, banners and funerary wrappings. In this workshop you learn about the traditional art of bark cloth making from world-renowned kapa maker, Kumu Page “Pūko‘a” Chang.

Connect to the earth and our culture while learning how to create beautiful, unique pieces of Hawaiʻi’s traditional fabric from the bark of the Wauke tree. This craft involves planting, harvesting, removing the outer bark from branches, pounding the fiber into cloth and designing and decorating the materials with symbolic prints. Kapa making also offers experience with tool making and dye making.

Materials are included and each participant leaves with a handmade piece of Kapa, and an individual stamping tool or set of dyes.

Kapa Printing belongs to a category of work inspired by indigenous knowledge and symbolism.

This workshop will teach you the process of ‘ohe kāpala printing (bamboo stamps), showcasing different native Hawaiian designs and their meanings. Participants will use traditional techniques and methods on modern materials.

One of the things that set Hawaiian kapa apart from others in the Pacific was the use of a wide range of colors and decoration added to the surface of the bark cloth using methods like stamping and embossing. Intricate designs hand-carved onto ‘ohe kāpala (bamboo stamps) are used to create repetitive patterns on kapa. Designs are many and varied, predominantly straight line geometrics with occasional leaf or round shapes. With one stamp an artist can create hundreds of different designs. Designs play on both negative and positive space, creating patterns with even the unstamped part of the design.

Materials are included and each participant leaves with a hand printed scarf.

Classes are limited to the first 20 guests, ages 10 and older.
