Sustainability

Fashion Week Hawai‘i connects students, customers, and fashion industry professionals by interacting in an honest conversation about today’s most discussed issues in fashion.

Fashion Week Hawai‘i seeks to raise awareness of socioeconomic, environmental, innovative, ethical boundaries facing the industry globally.

Aloha ʻĀina

We consider topics of negative impacts to the environment both on land and sea. We recognize that the Fashion Industry is one of the largest contributors of Green House Gasses and micro-plastic pollution. Aloha ‘Āina, which literally means “love of the land”, is a central idea of Native Hawaiian thought, cosmology and culture. ‘Āina is foundational to Native Hawaiian culture and identity, traditional and customary practices, and spiritual well-being of Native Hawaiians.

Aloha ʻĀina brings a perspective that pervades many aspects of life. Its ecological and cultural orientations are founded upon a sense of being connected to all living things.

We believe the fashion industry is responsibility to reduce its impact on the planet from making, wearing, and the disposing of clothing. We seek more transparency in the choice of materials, traceability and the complete production process.

We have concerns over cultural appropriation in fashion design and its use. The need to recognize original source of design ideas, traditions and protocol. An inspired culture is a great asset in business though business is not the only asset. We also appreciate, the exotic cultures that have been introduced into the mix and how the outcome is particularly enchanting.

And as is tradition in Hawai‘i we look forward to helping emerging talent achieve their own success.

We believe, everyone is a stakeholder.

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi

Since 2012, Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i decided to take keeping our beaches clean into our own hands while making the work fun. What we’ve learned along the way is that cleanups can only do so much. We now utilize our cleanups to inspire better consumer behaviors and continued coastal stewardship through cleanups, education, social media, and more.

We partner with diverse clients to make environmentally conscious choices when planning events, diverting waste all while educating and inspiring guests in the process. Hosting a zero waste or sustainable event can be simple and rewarding. We help you to minimize your events impact on the environment through pre-event consulting and during event implementation of our waste diversion systems and trained resource management/education staff.

All proceeds go directly back into our program to perpetuate our mission.
